Direct report refers to an employee who is managed by and reports to a person who is directly above them in the organizational hierarchy such as a manager, supervisor, or team leader.


What Is the Opposite of Direct Report?

The opposite of a direct report is an indirect report. An indirect report is an employee who reports to the direct report of another person who is above them in the hierarchy.

Managers, supervisors, and/or team leaders have authority over indirect reports because they manage their direct reports. They are also accountable for their performance and professional conduct.

What Are Examples of Direct Reports?

Examples of direct reports include:

  • Sale associates;
  • Customer service representatives;
  • Project managers;
  • Cashiers;
  • Assistants managers;
  • Managers.

Any person who reports directly to another person who is above them in the hierarchy can be the direct report of somebody else.
